Careful In The Sun traverses a verdant landscape of improvisation grounded in loops and songs by Maya Keren. Inspired by the idea of Māyā, a religious concept found in ancient Buddhist and Hindu texts describing the illusory nature of conscious reality, Careful In The Sun’s sonic and visual world constructs a personal mythology interrogating shadow, dreams, childhood, connection, memory, and inner life.
At its core, Careful is a band of friends: an open place to explore these heavy forces with fellow emo rockers who grew up playing jazz. All heavyweights in their own right, the collective members (Emmanuel Michael on electric guitar, Eliza Salem on drums, Anna Abondolo on fretless bass and voice, and Maya Keren on piano and voice) easily dance between off-kilter improvisation, cathartic indie-rock, and lush, looping chorales.
Careful In The Sun has performed at venues like Public Records and Winter Jazzfest and has received support from Looking Glass Arts (recording residency, 2023), The Center for Remembering and Sharing (touring grant, 2024), and YoungArts (recording grant, 2024). They released their eponymous debut EP in December 2025 with Munich-based Squama Recordings, and will release their full length LP “Eyes Purple Doves Heavy” with Squama in fall 2026.
Past iterations of the group have included the beloved Eden Girma on voice and electronics.
